Computing Facilities for Postgraduate CS Students at ADFA

For details of the hardware/software we have at ADFA, take a look here.

Research students normally have access to most of the School's public computing facilities, including UNIX hosts, Mac, PC and X-terminal labs, file servers, and the ADFA network. You will also have access to the academy's central UNIX host, octarine.

The school's computing facilities are supported via a helpdesk where you can get assistance with any problems which might arise.

Full time research students also have access to a workstation on their desk; options are Macs, PCs, X-terminals and Sparcs. A workstation of some sort can probably be provided within a few days of your arrival here, but there can be some delays in organising one of your particular preferred type. Your desktop machine may not, however, be the latest model unless you can demonstrate a reason why that is important to your research.

The school also has a small number of laptop machines for portable use. These are available for loan (enquire at the helpdesk), but they are in high demand, and priority for their use goes to the school's teaching functions.

It is expected that, if you have particular hardware/software requirements beyond what is normally available in the School, you would negotiate this during the enrolment process. Of course, we recognise that such requirements can arise during the course of research, and the School does make serious efforts to meet such needs within the constraints of a tight budget. If you do have such a need, you should raise the issue first with your supervisors, who will take it up with the appropriate people.

If you have problems with hardware or software, they should be referred via the School's help desk system, which is available 8am - 5pm on extension 8190, or in person at room G02. For technical support and especially booking of audio-visual facilities in the department, there is a web form.
