Doctoral Fellowships
Doctoral Fellowships
Australian doctoral research funding for full-time students has usually made
use of the scholarship model, rather than the 'teaching assistant' mechanism
widely used in North America. However, for a wide variety of reasons, the
scholarship model does not suit all students. The University of New South Wales
has recently introduced a new category of research funding, the Doctoral
Fellowship. It is quite similar to the American teaching assistantship.
Funding
Doctoral Fellows will receive a stipend of at least half the salary of a
Level A academic; at present, this would mean a little under $A20,000 per
annum (taxable). This is roughly comparable with the amount received under
the Australian Postgraduate Award scheme, and is certainly adequate for
comfortable living.
Duties
In return, doctoral fellows will be expected to undertake teaching or
equivalent duties up to six hours per week during session, or approximately
26 weeks of the year. They are also expected to be enrolled full-time in a
PhD programme.
Overseas Students
Overseas residents will require a visa to take up one of these fellowships. We
believe they are compatible with the requirements for student visas, since
they require an employment commitment of at most 160 hours per year. However it
is illegal for us to give advice on visa matters, so it will be necessary for
you to contact your local Australian embassy to confirm this.
The university is considering the possibility of reduced overseas student fees
for doctoral fellows. However decisions on this do not seem likely in the
short term. In the meantime, the school may be prepared to provide a
supplementary scholarship of $6,000 per annum to assist with living expenses
and fees.
The overall effect is that overseas doctoral fellows are
likely to have an income, after paying fees, of a little over $10,000 per
annum. This is not, by any means, a large amount, but it is enough for frugal
living in Canberra.
