Fees and Funding for International Students

Fees

International students are normally subject to the international student fee which in 1999 was $12,600 pa for full-time students. The fee for part-time studies is normally 50% of the full-time fee (part-time study is usually not an option for international students because of visa conditions, but the issue sometimes arises where students undertake part of their studies externally, usually in their home country).

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships

The main source of funding is the International Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme. Up-to-date information is available via the UNSW scholarships page. The IPRS covers tuition fees and medical expenses only. However IPRS students in the School of Computer Science are normally also awarded a School of Computer Science IPRS supplement award, which provides a living allowance of $6,000 (tax free) per annum. While this is not sufficient, of itself, for living expenses (you should allow a minimum of $10,000 pa for frugal living), it may be supplemented by limited part-time work. Students with acceptable communication and teaching skills will usually be able to obtain part-time tutoring and laboratory supervision work within the School of Computer Science, and the School will endeavour to find other work for students whose communication skills are insufficient for teaching.

Other Scholarships

Students from specific countries may also be eligible for AusAID ADS awards.

Information on a range of other scholarships is available via the main UNSW Scholarships page.

Academic Calendar

A major source of confusion for overseas students is the Australian academic calendar. Because it is in the Southern Hemisphere, the academic year in Australia runs from March to November. This has important implications for scholarships. Most scholarships in Australia are only available for the calendar year. If you need a scholarship to study in Australia, you should plan on commencing at the start of the academic year (ie March). Please note that there is no such thing here as a (Northern Hemisphere) Autumn (Fall) session.
